Frequently Asked Questions — Getting Around Munich

What is the difference between Munich's U-Bahn and S-Bahn?

Munich's U-Bahn (underground, operated by MVG) covers the city centre with 8 lines. The S-Bahn (suburban rail) extends further and includes Munich Airport (S1 and S8 lines). Both are integrated into the MVV fare network — a single zone ticket covers both.

How do I get from Munich Airport to the city centre?

S1 and S8 lines run from Munich Airport to Marienplatz in about 40 minutes, with trains every 10–20 minutes. An all-zones MVV ticket is required; the Bayern Ticket is not valid on the airport route. An isarCard or Airport+City Day Ticket are also valid options.

Does the Bayern Ticket cover travel within Munich city?

Yes — the Bayern Ticket covers unlimited travel on regional DB trains and most local transit (U-Bahn, S-Bahn, tram, bus) across Bavaria from 9am (6am weekends). Excellent for day trips to Neuschwanstein Castle or Salzburg. Note: it is NOT valid on Munich Airport S-Bahn lines S1 and S8.
