Frequently Asked Questions — Getting Around Bangkok

What is the difference between Bangkok's BTS Skytrain and MRT Metro?

The BTS Skytrain is elevated rail serving the modern shopping and tourist districts (Siam, Asok, Silom). The MRT is underground with the Blue Line covering Chatuchak Market and Chinatown. The two systems intersect at Asok/Sukhumvit and Silom/Sala Daeng but require separate fares when switching.

Can I use one card for both BTS and MRT in Bangkok?

No — the BTS uses the Rabbit card and the MRT uses its own stored-value card. You need to pay separately when switching systems. A universal single transit card covering both does not yet exist in Bangkok, unlike in cities like London or Tokyo.

Is there a direct train from Suvarnabhumi Airport to the Bangkok city centre?

Yes — the Airport Rail Link runs from Suvarnabhumi to Phaya Thai BTS station in about 30 minutes. A separate ticket is required; standard BTS or MRT cards do not cover it. From Phaya Thai, transfer to the BTS Sukhumvit Line for onward travel.
